and some people call me nine. (which has to do with Numerology... *sooo spooky isn't it?* smh haha)
I pray, design, study, analyze, educate, entertain, inform, inspire, and [most importantly] I drink.
my business' name is Design And Reason Communications, a full-service design consultancy specializing in products, graphics, interiors, wayfinding, and interfaces.

TwO- Soooo math.hue, what is design to you?

design+reason=communication

Visual communication design is the science of conveying visual messages (I use this phrase as a slogan). while, indeed, design involves art, so much of it has to do with user analysis, communication, and application of theory that it cannot be considered art. typically, an artist is portraying some emotion of their own. this is not the case with design as designers must remove themselves from the equation and communicate the client's message. this involves much more than the ability to express oneself, but to express someone else's abstract (and sometimes even undercooked) ideas visually.

Thr33- Ok ok, what initially sparked your passion to design?

time+thoughts+talent=passion

to BYONEST (plug), there aren't really any kids who say, "I want to be a DESIGNER when I grow up!" it just doesn't happen that way.

as a boy, I spent lots of time alone with my thoughts. some of the people I grew up around confused me so I chose to stay to myself a lot. this, of course, allowed for quite a bit of down time as there was only so much tv I could put up with (even then, I knew that a lot of what I saw on tv was a lie). I got into the arts: writing, music, and drawing. I suffered from stage fright so becoming a poet or musician was ruled out immediately. once I got deeper and deeper into drawing and painting, I found that I was exceptionally talented at drawing letters. CCAD accepted my portfolio submission after I graduated from Mifflin and off I went.

F0uR- What in life inspires you?

God+prayer=inspiration.

I'm fully aware that I'm not your typical Believer as my beliefs are quite rare (Uncommon) but I do believe in all the basic principle of Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, etc. which is: "do unto others as you would have others do unto yourself." this is why so many people know me as a source of inspiration, assistance, and guidance when possible.
Nas says, "to receive's great, but I lust giving."
I really feel him (pause) on that line because that's the way I've felt for most of my life. and, of course, there are always those who try and take advantage of me and for them I pray to the Almighty that they'll shake that spirit of greed.

FiV3- In your line of work, what do you bring to the table that other designers can not?

good question. everyday, I'm reminded that I'm only a beginner. as far as I've come as far as education, accomplishments, etc. it doesn't really matter. everyday I meet at least one designer from whom I can learn a great deal. shout out to Michael Lipscomb (22 March!) of Phenology , everybody at JWORK LIMITED (heeyyyy Ms ButterPecan! haha), and of course my big brother Brandan Craft (I owe you!) and everybody who supports Athlete Shirt. these (as well as many, many) other Black designers are really doing their thing.

but I guess its not really so much a matter of am I bringing something to the table that designers can not, I believe I'm bringing something to the table that many designers simply do not. I'm not some extraordinarily gifted person (aside from how many people probably believe I view myself), I just think I enhance certain interests of my own. specifically my spirituality, my love for hip hop, and the design principles which are instilled in me. you won't catch me compromising any of the three for any project. ever.

SiX- I feel you on that math! What are 3 major influences on your work?

afrocentricity+hiphop+demand=influence.

my roots will never leave me. no matter whether I deny my heritage or embrace it fully; its there. if you haven't guessed by now, I am African American (and damn proud!) and I love African American culture. African Americans have been through so much (from being forced to building the White House to running the White House) and I believe the journey has only just begun meaning, there's much more to benefit us than we can imagine in the future. I believe we can quicker reach this destination by loving one another and simply helping out when possible. for instance, if your brother or sister needs money for an admission fee to college, help them! in this case, it won't be very expensive unless they're applying to Harvard or Yale. if by chance that's the case, that's all the more reason to help.

hip-hop is one of the only things I can say I never left alone through-out my whole life. I remember, as a boy, sneaking into my older brother's bedroom to listen to Public Enemy and N.W.A. on his stereo (I would always get in trouble but it didn't matter) and even to this very day, I get chills when I hear the intro to "Fight The Power" by Public Enemy. lots of people say old-school hip-hop is better but I think that's like comparing apples to oranges when you look at artists like Elzhi of Slum Village, Papoose, and many artists out of Columbus, OH. this music is much different than what's constantly played on the radio; I guess if you compare the radio "hip-pop" of today to the radio hip-hop of the eighties, yeah it was better then but otherwise, there's no way to judge.

inquiries about a new project come daily. I'd say out of 20 people, I might get one new client. this is probably because many people don't quite understand the necessity of contracts and how payment schedules function (not in a lump sum, but over phases... usually a month or two). its very unfortunate that I've had to decline projects that I'm interested in due to monetary disagreement(s). if it were up to me, no one would have to pay for design but love and generosity (as necessary as they are) simply don't pay bills!

SeV3n- As far as design, what role do you see yourself in when given an assignment?

I would like to be more of the background organizer but I'm usually the organizer as well as the manager and designer.

EiGhT- Could you describe a recent accomplishment regarding one of your recent projects?

OSU's African American Alumni Society approached me a while back needing a flyer and website design. I ended up doing a visual identity (logo, stationery, examples of flyers / posters / etc) and a website design. I came to many huge ideas during this project and I found that it was the most fun I'd had on a project in years. probably ever.

Anybody that knows me knows that I like to dress... I keep my fly and high and my fresh the best! That's why when I first visited PHNLGY.com I felt like I was at home! (BTW the music playlist is BOMB!)

So me being the investigator that I am had to find out what the deal was with this Phenology... Who was the brains behind this operation and what they were about... Well I was pleased to find out that not only was Phenology a local line, but I was already Facebook friends with the "brains". Soo long story short as I do with everybody, I became good friends with Mike. Mike is one of the most personable, smart, cool people I know (besides myself that is haha) and he definitely has a longtime customer in BeShayBE (I already copped 2 pieces this month)!! What is the concept of Phenology?

A lot of people get it confused with the study of the brain which is phrenology. But Phenology is the study of biological things that happen naturally and organically. A good example is flowers and leaves growing, you know what I’m sayin’? But we flipped it and applied the same concept to fashion. It’s a brand that has a naturalness and organic feel to it. It can’t be fabricated man, it just is.


By definition Phenology is the study of a natural phenomena that recurs periodically due to climate change. So with us being the phenomena we look at it as the consumer studying us. Our fabric, our fit, our choice of colors, etc. and with every season our phenomena recurs in the form of our Collections. And also with that Phenology is doin’ our part to conserve the earth by making a conscious effort to manufacture earth-friendly products and garments. We specifically seek out companies that fit that mold.

1. I cuss a whooooooolllleeee lot that's why I like ORBIT! Clean a dirty mouth!
2. PURPLE is my favorite color! I try to avoid buyin purple stuff (eyeshadow, shirts, accesories etc) but I can't help myself. It's soooo beautiful, the walls in my room are purple and brown.
3. I have too many purses, way too many.
4. Capture the moment baby! I love taking pictures, I might post a couple with this entry!
5. I have many nicknames Shayla Staxxx, Mz. Parker, Bubble, ShayBe, Shayberaebaby, ShayRae, Shay, Rae' (my middle name), and so many more... Pick/make one!
6. I don't do heels a lot, but I just got these 4.5's and I want to wear them every day, I mean every day!!!!
7. I strive to alwayz have kind things to say to ppl. I like to push ppl's buttons in a positive way, motivationally. I want to see everyone prosper and do well in their journey that we all call life. If you put good out you will get it back and vice versa!
8. I LOVE CHILDREN! Absolutely positively love them! I look forward to the day that I have my own, until then I will practice on my-birthday-present-niece/nephew to come! Oh, and your children!

5. I find ways to excercise my freedom in being D0p3niqu3 by using words that ppl don't say anymore, or say in OHIO, like something is BOMB not the bomb, or BOSS, like those shoulder pads are BOSS or that perm is BOSS etc etc.

6. *I give you permission to skip this one because I started going off on a tangent lol*I can't stand a person that thinks they are better than anyone else!!! That is THE only thing that really rocks my boat! They think they know everybody and everything, when YOU probably know just as much, if not MORE... And alsoPPL that try 2 front on others... P.S. I also am an advocate for the truth. Nothing is worse than a liar because that person lives a lifestyle shrouded by the last lie they told... Who can keep up with that ish? And to lie to the ppl that LOVE you and will always to your last breath and beyond? Senseless! Just keep it TRILL!!!!!

7. I wanted to be a Russian interpreter when I was in middle school, my Uncle Michael said black ppl don't live in Russia NIGGA! (Just in case you did'nt know, he's CRAZY). He was like them Dayum Mexicans is takin over, you need to learn that! I started taking Spanish in HS and I don't remember much of any of it...SMH lol

8. Frappicuino is crack in a cup, it joins the ranks of Chipotle, Zuppa soup from Olive Garden, Chicken and wild rice soup from Panera, Raising Canes chicken fingers, Snickers with almonds, Pizza Uno's pizza skins and Reesch's donuts... I sound fat as hell now lol, dang!

9. I enjoy baking, I can actually cook I just don't get to do it much. I cook at Gloria's all the time, come see us! $5.00 per person!! We tryna get PAID IN FULL!

10. I have a problem applying myself to fullest of my potential. Laziness and procrastination are vices that I fight daily!

11. My cousin had a dream that I lost 20 lbs and became an underwear model, not knowing that I secretly desire to be an underwear model! Lol (I play too much)

12. I STAN for anything in my CITY that has substance, quality and is a cut above the rest! Shouts out to Cap City Connections, DJ Krate Digga, The Usual Suspects Crew, Mirrorlove Productions, Fly U, Fly Paper, The Nice Guy Movement... I plan on having y'all do the same for ME, someday!

13. I don't watch a lot of TV @ all. You don't wanna ask me what happened on America's best dance crew because I aint seen it lol. I watch crime shows mostly, I'm more of a reader. Oh and music lover, ahhh yes! Jay-Z, Kid CuDi, Raheem DeVaughn, Eric Roberson, Outkast, Marsha Ambrosious, Fred Hammond, Colin Munroe, 88-Keys, and too many more take me away!

14. Speaking of reading, I've been known to finish a 500+ pg book in 1-2 days. Reading is fundamental! My vocabulary can support this claim. That is also why I'm a good writer.

16. I am addicted to my BB! I'm typing on it now lol. BBM me! Once u get a CrackBerry and understand ALL that it can do, you will understand why the world was created...Marinate on that...lol

17. I am thinking about getting my lip pierced and am getting 2 tattoos... A crown on my wrist and GOD IS LOVE on the other...Yeah I can live with that! I will not fall into the tramp stamp line or get anything stupid tatted on my chest like MY OWN DAMN NAME or paw prints.... NO offense lol

18. I am a singer. Yes I can say that now I have a slightly elevated sense of confidence, due to encouragement from various sources. I have very very very intense stage fright, I SWEAT like a whore in church, like bad which is weird because I'm confident in most other areas...

19. I'm scared to fall in love. Lions, Tigers, Bears is a TRUE story to me!! I don't like to not be in control. When I'm thru with you I'm thru, and if I want something I go after it! Love is a challenge to me and because I know the true definition, I can't continue to SETTLE for anything less and put my ALL into it. Compromising for inferiority is not the name of the game anymore baby!

20. I like to use CAPITALIZATION for emphasis, ! marks because I'm always excited and the phrase lol is used very heavily in my text msgs, twits etc. I guess it's because I'm always laughin and all lol.

21. I LOVE taking pictures, my motto is capture the moment baby! And I have soooo many moments captured!

22. I like looking up quotes! I have had a love affair with words 4ever and won't give up on it ANYtime soon! In addition to that I like to use larger words when I know that I can use words with less syllables as to not confuse y'all simps... Lol

24. I like to converse with ppl. I like to meet new ppl and get inside their mind and see what's goin on. I have lots of associates and ppl that I count dear to me. Cousins that are pretty much sisters, close friends that are family and the ppl I communicate with on a regular basis are a pretty big deal to me. So if I talk to you regularly or tell you I miss you or that you crossed my mind, I really mean it...Also if I'm really really really mean to you *cough**cough**cough**cough* (Rashaun!)*cough**cough**cough* (MARISA)*pounds chest* whew I got something stuck in my throat!! *cough* *cough* (Gloria)*cough*, that means I'll love you 4ever lol lol

25. I anticipate that day that I say I DO to the man I'm gonna love for the rest of my life. My parents have been married going on 22 years. Until then I'm choosing to live a lifestyle of celibacy. I'm so damn serious y'all, I MUST have someone to fall in love with my beautiful mind over my beautiful body lol etc... That shit gets BO-ring! So although it may be hard, I gotta change what I'm doing to get different results, unless I like being heartbroken which I don't!!!

Beyonce is a freaking genius for this!!!! If she's doing what it looks like she is doing then I will appreciate her genius that much more! Now for those of you who did'nt know Beyonce is not the only one that capatilizies off of her sucess as a multi-platinum recording artist! No there is also Sasha, Bey's alter ego that takes the ride along with her on the daily! Well rumor is that she is releasing her upcoming cd as a double disc entitled "I am" to be unleashed on December, 18th featuring songs from both Beyonce and Sasha... This is said to be her most personal release as of late. Can u say T.I. vs T.I.P.????
Don't get me wrong I got MAD love for Bey and Sasha son!! This idea is definitely a fantasic one especially for an artist of Beyonce's caliber. Recently I was confused like why is she releasing 2 singles and videos back 2 back??? But now it makes perfect sense!!! Check out the video's on deck!!!



I think that Sasha Beyonce is a bad bitch for wearin that leotard and dancin her tail off the whole damn video!! Her dancing and vocal skills are off the hook. The single ladies song is very catchy and WILL be hot in the club but lacks the major substance that Beyonce is claiming to be moving towards… “Like A Boy” certainly makes up for that though, it has great lyrics and the imagery shown along with the lyrics bring more depth to the song….




If she's doing a dual personality album that'll be very interesting to see, because she is definitely going to capaitalize off of the people that want to see both sides of her....

WILD'N OUT! Does this joint still come on??? I don't know for real cuz I don't watch TV all like that no more. So first off while I'm talkin about Wayne I must mention the fact that some of his actions that disturb me lol. Mainly being the newest song release "Swagger jackin from us" along with Jim Jones and Juelz Santana. The only thing I'll talk about is the fact that the man was on the original "Swagger like us"! That perplexes me to no avail... The swagger jackin thing will be our next post though. I wanna say that I'm not on the Lil Wayne bandwagon, nor am I a hater, but I think he's kinda crazy and has personal problems. I will say that this dude was spittin on that metaphorical shit in this song for real... Whoever wrote this was not on earth, they were on some me, myself and I, outta this world type of shit. lol. Take a listen and see if you can follow the man.....

OKKKKKKK! So y'all may not know this, but Jay-Z is my BOY!!! I love this man his swagger, his business sense, just everything about him! I am certainly a STAN for Jay! So if you know his discography, you know that he has a couple of classics under his belt, "Reasonable Doubt" and "The Blueprint" to be exact. Well just relax your mind and let your conciense be free because he's coming at you with "Blueprint 3"!!!! The anticipated release date is December 3rd, the day before his birthday. He's expected to be working with Kanye of course amongst others.

Yes Yes Yes I got the shoes!!! YEah for me! They are so hottt! I also crafted an outfit @ the last minute because I could'nt help but wear it the day after I got the shoes (I alwayz do that) It was kinda impromptu, but it came out pretty good. I should be on a design on a dime show for fashion because total w/ the shoes the outfit was $120 except the accessories because it was stuff I had already, with the exception on the scarf, which I got from the best place on earth, TARGET!!!! Check me out yoo and peep the make-up, I kinda made up the lip thing @ the last minute....

As reported by Necole Bitchie, Atlanta bred hip-hop artist T.I. is going to be starting a clothing line amongst other projects. The line is going to be called AKOO (A King Of Oneself) and is set to be revealed at the end of the year. His sixth studio album "Paper Trail" is supposed to be coming out on September 30th. The thing that had me cracking up was his opinion of one that wears his clothing and still can't get the ladies....(lol) read below:

Ok I'm bored so imma blog for y'all... Man I just gotta show y'all some things that are hott to me! First and foremost I'll start by saying that I am not a tennis shoes and tees type of chick. Nor am I a stillettos and dresses type... I'm kinda like a hybrid of these types. I switch up the style, keep it unpredictable, sharp, sexy, swaggnasty, etc etc. I recently saw these sneakers @ the mall and I tested positive for head-over-heels-itis!! They are Sooooo dope to me I just gotta go cop these!!! 2mrw!!! Peep the chain on the back!!!! They're supposed to be comin out with a shirt to match them, kinda like they did for the AF1's a couple years back...
